What is a DDoS attack, and how to protect against it

A game server that lags then disconnects, an unreachable Discord bot, a website that goes down without warning: the cause is often a DDoS attack. Here is what it actually is, and how our infrastructure is protected.

What is a DDoS attack?

DDoS stands for "Distributed Denial of Service". The principle: overwhelm a server or connection with such a large volume of traffic that legitimate users can no longer reach it. "Distributed" means this traffic doesn't come from a single machine, but from thousands of different devices, often without their owners' knowledge.

Unlike a typical hack, a DDoS attack doesn't steal or break into anything: its only goal is to make a service unavailable, by drowning it in requests.

Layer 3/4 and Layer 7: two families of attacks

Layer 3/4 attacks target the network and transport layers (raw traffic: SYN, UDP, ICMP packets sent en masse) to saturate a server's bandwidth or network resources, before the application is even touched.

Layer 7 attacks target the application layer (HTTP requests that look legitimate, but sent in very large numbers) to exhaust the resources of the web server or the application itself.

Asuoo's Anti-DDoS protection covers Layer 3/4, the most common type of attack against game servers, bots, and network infrastructure.

Who is affected?

Game servers and their communities are a classic target, often hit during a competitive match or out of rivalry between players. Discord bots present on many servers can also attract this kind of unwanted traffic, as can any site or service exposed publicly on the internet.

No infrastructure is inherently immune: what changes is the network's ability to absorb and filter that traffic before it reaches the final server.

How our infrastructure is protected

Every IP attempting to connect to our machines is checked in real time against the NetBait.org database, a library referencing over 200 million IP addresses, each scored from 0 to 1 by how dangerous it is.

On our system, any IP scoring 0.30 or above is automatically banned, before it even gets a response from our infrastructure: no yes, no no, nothing at all.

On top of that, our entire network is protected by a Layer 3/4 Anti-DDoS system, which absorbs volumetric attacks before they ever reach your server, without slowing down legitimate traffic.

A few good practices, on top of that

A dedicated IP (included on our VPS) avoids sharing your network reputation with other customers. Keeping your software and dependencies up to date also reduces other exploitable entry points.

For a bot or application, avoiding directly exposing sensitive infrastructure information (real IP address, internal ports) limits the surface visible from the outside.

Protection included, not a paid option

Layer 3/4 Anti-DDoS and real-time IP verification are not reserved for a premium plan: they apply across our entire infrastructure, VPS, WebHost, and application hosting, starting from the cheapest plan.

A transparent company, hosted in France

Asuoo is operated by Loïc Valence, as a sole proprietorship based in Saône-et-Loire, France (SIRET 106 340 870 00018), and the entire infrastructure is hosted in France, on dedicated, non-shared servers.

Support is handled directly by the team, with no auto-reply script, with handling within 24 business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Anti-DDoS also protect against application-layer attacks (Layer 7)?

Our protection covers Layer 3/4 (network and transport), the most common type of attack against game servers, bots, and network infrastructure.

What exactly bans a malicious IP?

Every IP is checked in real time against the NetBait.org database. Any IP with a danger score of 0.30 or above is automatically banned.

Does this protection slow down my server?

No. Filtering happens upstream, on the network, before traffic reaches your server: legitimate traffic is not affected.

Which plans include this protection?

All of them: VPS, WebHost, and application hosting, starting from the cheapest plan, with no extra paid option.
