How to host a Discord bot for free

A Discord bot running on your PC goes offline the moment you turn it off. Here's how to host it properly, with Node.js (discord.js) or Python (discord.py), without spending a cent to get started.

Why not just run your bot on your own PC

It's the first thing everyone tries: running the bot script directly on their computer. The problem shows up the moment the PC shuts down, goes to sleep, restarts for an update, or the internet connection drops for a few seconds: the bot disappears from every Discord server it's in.

Real hosting runs continuously, on a stable, monitored connection, without depending on your personal computer. That's the difference between a bot that answers at 3am and a bot that vanishes the moment you close your laptop.

discord.js (Node.js) or discord.py (Python): the two options

The two most widely used libraries for coding a Discord bot are discord.js, in JavaScript on Node.js, and discord.py, in Python. Both are actively maintained, well documented, and let you do roughly the same things: slash commands, reactions, buttons, role management, automated moderation.

The choice mostly comes down to the language you already know. Our application hosting plans run Node.js or Python, and you choose the runtime version yourself: your bot runs in exactly the environment it needs, without you having to install anything yourself.

How many resources does your bot actually need?

A simple Discord bot (basic commands, a few reactions, light moderation) uses very little: a few dozen megabytes of RAM and a fraction of a CPU core are usually enough, even across several Discord servers.

A heavier bot (audio playback, image generation, calls to an AI, presence on hundreds of servers) will need more RAM and CPU to stay responsive without lag.

Deploy your bot in minutes

A console is built directly into your client area to start, stop, and monitor your bot, and SFTP access lets you upload your code (and update it) without any complex command line work.

Once your Discord token is configured and your code is uploaded, your bot stays online continuously, with the same security as the rest of our infrastructure.

Security we take seriously

A public bot, present on many Discord servers, can attract unwanted connection attempts on the infrastructure hosting it. Every IP attempting to connect to our machines is checked in real time against the NetBait.org database, a library referencing over 200 million IP addresses, each scored from 0 to 1 by how dangerous it is.

Any IP scoring 0.30 or above is automatically banned, before it even gets a response from our infrastructure. The entire network is also protected by a Layer 3/4 Anti-DDoS system.

A free plan, no credit card

Application Free (€0/month) offers 256 MB of DDR5 RAM, 30% CPU, and 1 GB of NVMe storage, with full SFTP access, no credit card required: plenty for a simple or modestly-sized bot to get started.

If your bot grows (more servers, more features), Application Start (€0.80/month) doubles the resources and adds a database, and Application Medium (€1.50/month) goes up another notch.

A transparent company, hosted in France

Asuoo is operated by Loïc Valence, as a sole proprietorship based in Saône-et-Loire, France (SIRET 106 340 870 00018), and the entire infrastructure is hosted in France, on dedicated servers.

Support is handled directly by the team, with no auto-reply script, with handling within 24 business hours.

What about a project bigger than a bot?

If your project outgrows a Discord bot (an actual game server, a full website alongside the bot, or a need for full root access), our VPS and WebHost plans run on the same French infrastructure and the same security.

Frequently asked questions

Can I host a Discord bot for free at Asuoo?

Yes, on the Application Free plan, no credit card required.

Should I choose Node.js or Python for my bot?

It depends on the library you use: discord.js runs on Node.js, discord.py on Python. Both runtimes are available.

Is the free plan enough for a large bot?

For a simple or modestly-sized bot, yes. For a bot with many features or present on a large number of servers, the Start or Medium plan is recommended.

Is my bot really hosted in France?

Yes, on the same dedicated infrastructure as our VPS and WebHost plans.
