VPS on Debian: what you need to know

Debian is one of the oldest still actively developed Linux distributions, and serves as the foundation for a huge number of other distributions, including Ubuntu itself. It's maintained by a community of volunteers, with no commercial company behind it, which partly explains its particularly cautious approach to updates.

Its release cycle is deliberately long: every package is tested extensively before making it into a stable release, at the cost of sometimes less recent software than other distributions.

That caution has a direct consequence: once a Debian server is set up, it tends to "just work" for a long time, with no unexpected behavior change after an update. That matters a lot for a production server you don't want to babysit constantly.

The apt package manager, shared with Ubuntu, remains just as easy to use, with very comprehensive repositories.

Debian is particularly well suited to production servers that need to stay stable over time: databases, critical network services, or any application where reliability matters more than having the very latest version of a piece of software.
